Clay Pottery of the Southern States

When most of us think of pottery, we might picture the lone artist throwing clay onto a wheel to produce their items—however, pottery wheels were not used in the Americas prior to European contact. As such, Native Americans have a long and varied history of using coiling and hand-building techniques to create their pottery.

On Friday, October 20 at 1:30 PM, come to the Lakes Region Library in Inverness and join the SETS Foundation for a one-of-a-kind presentation on traditional pottery. During this program, you’ll get a chance to see some samples of pottery made by Native Americans. You’ll also be shown some traditional hand-building techniques by archaeologist Leslie Moore, which you’ll then use to create your very own pot to take home. All supplies will be provided, but registration Is required.

Library programs are free and available to everyone. For additional information about programming please call your local branch, follow @citruslibraries on Facebook or Instagram. Additional information can also be found by visiting us at citruslibraries.org.
