New Children’s Library Card to Release in December 2025

Beginning December 22, 2025, the Citrus County Library System will be adding a new, optional, library card for parents/legal guardians to select when signing their children up for a library card. With the addition of this card, parents/legal guardians will be able to select between the Children’s Standard Access card and the Children’s Restricted Access card. This new card will provide parents with more flexibility and choice over what their children are reading.
Parents who choose the Children’s Restricted Access card will limit their children to books and media in the youth room of each library. These selections will include Easy (Picture) Books, Easy Reader Books, Juvenile Books, and Juvenile DVDs. They will not be able to check out books from the Young Adult and Adult sections, as well as DVDs. In addition to the checkout limitations, they will not be able to log onto the library’s computers or access the library’s digital services, Libby and Kanopy.
“We know that some parents are looking for stricter controls over what their children can access at the library, and this card will accomplish that,” said Library Director Adam Chang. “By making this card optional, the decision remains with the parents. Our goal at the end of the day is to get kids reading. To accommodate this, we have been steadily adding titles to our Juvenile collection for the last few years, and we’re already seeing an increase in checkouts from that age range.”
Any parents whose child(ren) already have a Children’s Standard Access card can switch their children to the new Children’s Restricted Access card at no charge. For additional information about signing up for a library card, visit: citruslibraries.org/library-card.
