From the Director’s Desk – June 2026

Public libraries have always played a role in preserving and sharing American history through archives, genealogy collections, exhibits, civic engagement, and programs and events like Flag Day and Constitution Day.
This year, Citrus Libraries is proud to join the national commemoration of the 250th anniversary of signing the Declaration of Independence through Stars, Stripes, and Stories: 50 Programs to Celebrate America’s 250th. These programs are a great way to reflect on our nation’s past, honor the history of America, and dream of the future.
We have thousands of books available for checkout. To further celebrate and provide resources for this occasion, Citrus Libraries was awarded a Florida Humanities Grant which allowed us to provide 100 new books about America for both our physical and digital collection. Books are currently on display at our library branches and on the digital catalog.
As a part of this celebration, patrons can pick up a Florida Symbols coloring book (while supplies last) at any library branch and explore a variety of free programs highlighting American history, culture, and civic engagement. Whether you’re creating a patriotic craft, attending a History Hour presentation, or enjoying a concert featuring music that has shaped our nation, there are many ways to participate.
Over the coming weeks, I encourage you to visit your local library, discover a new book about our nation’s history, explore our displays, and take part in a program or two. Together, these experiences help us better understand the people, events, and ideals that have shaped America over the last 250 years.
We look forward to celebrating this milestone with you and your family.
