Volunteer Spotlight August 2026

Every month, the Citrus County Library System features a volunteer in their “Outside the Stacks” blog on their website. This month, the Lakes Region Library would like to shine the spotlight on Mary. We asked Mary several questions and thought it would be fun to share her responses!

Q: Why did you start volunteering?

A: I started volunteering at the library to get connected and to give back to the community.

Q: How long have you been volunteering with the library?

A: I have been volunteering for two years, and am helping with the Summer Reading program as well.

Q: What are some of the challenges you’ve faced while volunteering and how have you overcome them?

A: When I started volunteering, I was shelving books in the main section of the library and I could not reach the top shelves, so would have to leave them on the cart. Then Dori suggested shelfing in the youth section where I can reach everything, hooray!

Q: Other than volunteering, what do you like to do with your free time?

A: I love to walk every day, and even in the Florida heat, I do about 2 miles a day with our rescued dogs. They love it too!

Q: What is a fun fact about you?

A: I was adopted from Ireland, and recently found some of my relatives.

Q: What is your favorite food?

A: My favorite food is a rare steak with a baked potato and a salad, to keep it healthy.

Q: Do you volunteer anywhere else in the community?

A: I also volunteer for the Citrus County Sheriff’s Department as a neighborhood watch, usually 4 hours a week.
