Pam P.

Literacy Volunteer

Why did you start volunteering?

“I love to read, and I’m passionate about sharing this ability with others. For many years. I was involved in literacy programs in Iowa, and am a strong believer in life-long learning.”

Has volunteering changed how you see the library?

“Our library system provides plenty of resources, and is staffed with so many friendly, helpful people who support  tutors and learners. They are always eager to help each person who comes in with whatever questions they have. The more I’m in our library, the more I discover about it. And the more books I check out!”

What’s been one of your favorite volunteer moments?

“I can’t take much credit, because Ganesha did all the work, but I was very proud and happy for him when he passed his citizenship exam and became a U.S. Citizen. As he learned about our country, I was learning much about his Indian culture, as well. Each tutor session has been a rewarding experience for us both.”

What’s something you would say to encourage someone else to volunteer?

“Reading opens your mind to the world. The literacy skills necessary for full participation in today’s society are very high, and as a tutor, I want to help my learner build the self-confidence needed to meet his goals with success.”
