“The Father of Waters Again Goes Unvexed to the Sea” – the Siege and Fall of Vicksburg

Join us at the Central Ridge Library on Thursday, July 10th at 2:00 PM for a new History Hour presentation on the 47-day siege of Vicksburg. This program will also include a presentation of period uniforms, equipment, and gear from the American Civil War.

President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed the Father of Waters statement when he learned of the surrender of a key bastion along the Mississippi River – the city of Vicksburg. Lincoln also once remarked, “Vicksburg is the key! The war can never be brought to a close until that key is in our pocket.” Confederate President Jefferson Davis echoed Lincoln’s sentiments of the importance of Vicksburg when he referred to Vicksburg as “the nail head that held the South’s two halves together.” The strategic significance of Vicksburg was evident to most Union and Confederate leaders.

When Confederate General John C. Pemberton surrendered Vicksburg to Union General U.S. Grant on July 4, 1863, it cut the Confederacy in two and enabled subsequent strategic conquests in the Confederacy. The capture of Vicksburg was a critical event in the American Civil War, yet it was quickly overshadowed by the Battle of Gettysburg and remains so to this day.
