Volunteer Spotlight July 2025
Every month, the Citrus County Library System features a volunteer in their “Outside the Stacks” blog on their website. This month, the Lakes Region Library would like to shine the spotlight on Janet. We asked Janet several questions and thought it would be fun to share her responses!

Janet
Q: What is something you would say to encourage someone else to volunteer?
A: One of the most rewarding aspects of volunteering at the library is the opportunity to connect with people from all walks of life. Libraries serve as equalizers, welcoming everyone regardless of age, background or socioeconomic status. These interactions foster a profound sense of community and belonging.
Q: How long have you been volunteering with the library?
A: I have been a member of the Friends of the Library since 2015 and have served in various capacities, including working at the “Book House”, sorting and pricing books for the Mega Book Sales, serving as an officer for the Friends of the Citrus County Library System (FOCCLS), working at the Mega Book Sales, and currently volunteering one day week at the Lakes Region Library.
Q: What inspired you to volunteer with the library?
A: My journey as a volunteer began with my love of books. Growing up, libraries were my sanctuary, filled with shelves brimming with stories that offered endless adventures, wisdom, and solace. I volunteer now to give back to the institution that has meant so much to me.
One of the most compelling reasons I volunteer at the library is my belief in literacy and equal access to information. In a world where not everyone has the same privileges, libraries help level the playing field by providing free access to books, technology, and educational programs. Volunteering allows me to champion this cause and help ensure that everyone, regardless of their circumstances, has the tools they need to succeed.
Q: What book to you recommend to all of your friends to read and why?
A: I recommend “the Little Prince” by Antoine de Saint-Exurpéry. The story emphasizes the importance of looking beyond the surface and understanding the value of what we invest our time, effort, and love into. What truly matters in life is not superficial appearances, but the bonds of love, friendship, and responsibility that resonate in our hearts.
Q: Other than volunteering, what do you like to do with your free time?
A: I enjoy spending time with friends and, of course, reading!
Q: Do you volunteer anywhere else in the community?
A: Yes, I also volunteer with and am a member of the Citrus County Democratic Executive Committee, the Democratic Women’s Club of Citrus County as well as a member of the Inverness Garden Club.
