Volunteer Spotlight December 2025, Bonnie, a Literacy Volunteer.

Volunteer Spotlight December 2025

Every month, the Citrus County Library System features a volunteer in their “Outside the Stacks” blog on their website. This month, Lakes Region Library would like to shine the spotlight on Bonnie, a Literacy Volunteer. We asked Bonnie several questions and thought it would be fun to share her responses!

Volunteer Spotlight

Bonnie

Q: Why did you start volunteering?

A: I started volunteering with Literacy Volunteers after I retired 14 years ago. I had worked fulltime in the healthcare field and felt that I could still be useful in other ways.

Q: What is something you would say to encourage someone else to volunteer?

A: In retirement it can be too easy to become complacent and not seek out new activities, volunteering can give you a sense of purpose and a sense of accomplishment.

Q: How has volunteering impacted your life?

A: Volunteering has given me an opportunity to meet new people and make lasting relationships.

Q: What book to you recommend to all of your friends to read and why?

A: I enjoy books by many authors and find that reading a book by an author that I’m not familiar is often most enjoyable. As a nurse and someone who grew up in the Vietnam era, “The Women” by Kristin Hannah was an emotional read.

Q: What is a fun fact about you?

A: My husband would say there are many “funny” things about me, but seriously I love life and I love people.

Q: Do you volunteer anywhere else in the community?

A: I am a member of PEO, a women’s organization whose main purpose is raising scholarship funds for young women seeking higher education.
