“A Dinosaur Fossil from Field to Lab” Two-Day Event!

A rare opportunity is presenting itself to the Citrus Libraries members with an interest in fossils. Learn about the detailed work that goes into taking a field-prepared fossil in its transportation jacket, opening the jacket, and preparing the fossil for display or study.

On June 17th at 1:30 PM, join a team of scientists from the Science Education Training and Support Foundation (the SETS Foundation) for a comprehensive presentation on the background of the fossil jacket and what to expect during the workshop the following day. This informational presentation will educate attendees about fossils, fossil jackets, the process involved in transporting fossils from the field to the lab, and how to prepare fossils.

On June 18th, the SETS Foundation, along with your help, will open and work on a fossil jacket containing a 65 million-year-old fossil from the Hell Creek formation in Montana. What is in the jacket is unknown, but several educated guesses from looking at x-rays hint that the jacket contains a limb portion of a Hadrosaurids, a large plant-eating duck-billed dinosaur. One-hour appointments, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, are available to reserve an opportunity for this hands-on workshop.

Registration is required for the June 17th presentation and the June 18th workshop that will be held at the Lakes Region branch. It is highly recommended for workshop registrants to also attend the presentation so they are aware of what to expect during the workshop. This program is geared toward tweens and teens but can be enjoyed by all ages.

The fossil jacket will be on display at the Lakes Region branch in Inverness beginning June 1st. After the workshop, the fossil will be on display to show what was discovered.
