General Volunteer Descriptions

Administrative Office Support


POSITION CATEGORY: Administration/Operations
POSITION LOCATION: Central Ridge Branch – Beverly Hills (Admin. Offices)
Time Commitment:
2 hours per week

POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The Administrative Office Support volunteer supports the Administrative Staff with general office duties.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office and Excel Software.
  • Must be able to use common office equipment.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Maintain confidentiality in regard to all documentation.
  • Organizational skills.
  • Must be an adult.

COMMITMENT:

  • Commit to a minimum of 6 months.

  • Scanning documents
  • Data entry
  • Archiving Newspaper Clippings
  • Performing photocopying

Book Repair Technician


POSITION CATEGORY: Materials Management
POSITION LOCATION: Central Ridge Branch – Beverly Hills
Time Commitment:
2-3 hours per week

POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The position of Book Repair Technician assists the Materials Management Team with minor book repairs. These are materials that have been damaged due to general wear and tear, mostly spines and loose pages that need to be mended.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to work well independently
  • Ability to use special tools and to determine the best method/materials to mend books
  • Incredible attention to detail
  • Patience
  • An artistic talent and ability to use tape, binding glue, and rubber bands in a very careful and creative manner
  • This position is mostly sitting and bending over for an extended period of time

COMMITMENT:

  • Set schedule for a few weeks to start, then very flexible but consistent.
  • Commit to a minimum of 6 months, due to training requirements.

Digital Media Assistant


POSITION CATEGORY: Administrative/Operations
POSITION LOCATION: Central Ridge Branch – Beverly Hills
Time Commitment:
4-12 hours per week

POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Responsibilities include general digital media and marketing content gathering.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Basic knowledge of photography and video taking
  • Basic knowledge of image editing, both on a mobile device and on a computer
  • Familiarity with various social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to collect a variety of content to be used for social media accounts, flyers, and website
  • Attention to detail
  • Organizational skills
  • Must have own transportation and valid Florida Drivers’ license

COMMITMENT:

  • Maintain regular weekly hours
  • 12 hours preferred

Homebound Delivery Volunteer


POSITION CATEGORY: Homebound Delivery
POSITION LOCATIONS: Available at all locations
Time Commitment:
2-4 hours monthly

POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The Citrus County Library System provides materials for medically homebound patrons, which is a volunteer-run program.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • May be subject to a Level 2 Background Check
  • Ability to lift and carry either individual bundles or boxes filled with library materials to and from a vehicle and to the client’s home or residence (up to 20lbs).
  • Valid Florida Driver’s license
  • Ability to work independently
  • Understanding of all confidentiality laws and statutes
  • Must be an adult

COMMITMENT:

  • Minimum 6-month commitment

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Requesting and tracking materials for each patron based on individual interests
  • Packing and loading materials into and out of a vehicle
  • Phoning patrons to remind them of the upcoming delivery
  • Delivering materials to the patron’s home or residence once or twice a month
  • Picking up and returning materials back to the library

Information Systems Technical Support


POSITION CATEGORY: Library Information Systems Management
POSITION LOCATION: Central Ridge Library – Beverly Hills
Time Commitment:
4-24 hours per week

POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The purpose of this position is to assist Information Systems in providing primary helpdesk and systems support to the administrative offices and five branches of our library system.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience with or strong interest in learning about technology setup, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
  • Ability to work independently
  • Some knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, operating systems, general computer hardware, and peripherals, as well as mobile devices including tablets and e-readers is helpful.
  • Hardware, software, or networking certifications (i.e. Microsoft MCSE, Cisco CNA) are very helpful but not mandatory.

COMMITMENT:

  • Ability to work several hours from 1-3 days a week.

Library Clerk Assistant


POSITION CATEGORY: Circulation Services
POSITION LOCATIONS: Available at all locations
Time Commitment:
2-4 hours per week

POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The position of Library Clerk Assistant is responsible for assisting the branches with various circulation duties.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to sort books into alphabetical order by author’s last name, book title, and by library-designated categories or into numerical order by Dewey Decimal System order, with provided training
  • Ability to answer the telephone and take messages.
  • This job requires a significant amount of physical activity, including standing, walking, and bending for an extended period of time.
  • Must be able to move circulation bins that may weigh up to 20 lbs.
  • Must be able to shift materials due to crowding.
  • Work well independently.
  • Great attention to detail.
  • Must understand the safety protocols of the library and county

COMMITMENT:

  • Maintain a regular, weekly, or monthly schedule.
  • Commit to a minimum of 6 months for adults or 3 months for students.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Cleaning materials that have been returned to the library
  • Maintaining collection appearance for tidiness and condition
  • Re-shelving materials by type and placing them in alphabetical or numerical order, using the Dewey Decimal system
  • Responsible for retrieving materials from return bins/book drops
  • Responsible for ongoing shelf reading (checking the order of shelved items for accuracy)

Package Processor


POSITION CATEGORY: Materials Management
POSITION LOCATION: Central Ridge Branch – Beverly Hills
Time Commitment:
4-6 hours per week

POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The position of Packaging Processor assists the Materials Management team with the sorting of incoming and outgoing materials in the Interlibrary Loan (ILL) department.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to move books and materials bins that may weigh up to 30lbs
  • Work well independently after completing training
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to open a variety of packaging and organize incoming materials
  • Ability to properly package materials

COMMITMENT:

  • Maintain a regular, weekly, or monthly schedule
  • Notify staff if they cannot report on a scheduled day
  • Commit to a minimum of 6 months for adults or 3 months for students

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Opening, sorting, and organizing incoming materials from different libraries across the state/country
  • Properly packaging outgoing materials according to ILL’s workflow
  • Performing related tasks, as needed
  • Must maintain discretion and a respectful manner regarding a broad range of diverse materials

Program Facilitator/Assistant


POSITION CATEGORY: Circulation Services
POSITION LOCATION: Available at all locations
Time Commitment:
Varies, as needed

POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Program Facilitator Assistant is a temporary to permanent volunteer position. The purpose of this position is to help branch programming by assisting in the facilitation of programs held at the branch. These programs will generally be arts and crafts programs or health and fitness programs.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must have knowledge and experience with the topic or event in which they are assisting
  • Must enjoy and be comfortable interacting with people
  • Must work well independently
  • Must be willing to follow CCLS procedures

COMMITMENT:

  • Maintain a regular schedule, either weekly or monthly
  • Notify staff as soon as possible if they cannot report on a scheduled day
  • Commit to a minimum of 6 months

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Maintain a County Activity Waiver, when necessary
  • Responsible for communicating your availability and topics to staff

Special Events Assistant


POSITION CATEGORY: Circulations Services
POSITION LOCATIONS: Available at all locations
Time Commitment:
Varies, as needed

POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Special Events Assistant is a temporary volunteer position recruited during library special events. Duties vary and are determined at the time of the event.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must work well independently
  • Must pay attention to detail

COMMITMENT:

  • Availability must be flexible
  • Notify staff as soon as possible, if they cannot report on a scheduled day

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Greeting the public at special events or programs
  • Directing attendees to a specific area/room
  • Booth or table management at a special event
  • Various other related tasks, as needed

Tales on Wheels Program (TOW)


POSITION CATEGORY: Youth Services
POSITION LOCATIONS: Available at all locations
Time Commitment: Minimum of 2 hours per month

POSITION DESCRIPTION:
A Tales on Wheels (TOW) volunteer travels to preschools and child care centers and presents a story time program to children at those locations.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • May be subject to a Level 2 Background Check
  • Must have own transportation and valid Florida Driver’s License
  • Must have strong reading and communication skills
  • Must enjoy working with children
  • Must be an adult

COMMITMENT:

  • Attend initial 1.5-hour TOW training with Youth Librarian
  • Attend a 2.0-hour continuing education workshop once or more per year
  • Work with an assigned preschool or child care center for a minimum of 6 months
  • Story times may be conducted weekly, biweekly, or monthly, depending on the site’s wishes and the volunteer’s schedule.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Attend TOW Training with Youth Librarian
  • Help design educational and fun story times

Technical Processing Assistant


POSITION CATEGORY: Materials Management
POSITION LOCATION: Central Ridge Branch – Beverly Hills
Time Commitment: 2-3 hours per week

POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The position of Technical Processing Assistant is responsible for assisting the Materials Management Team with weeding books and replacing and repairing CDs, and DVDs.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to work well independently following training and make appropriate decisions on materials needed to label DVDs and CDs
  • Attention to detail and ability to place multiple labels in their precise locations
  • Ability to use a paper cutter, scissors, X-Acto knives, hair dryers, and other materials
  • Ability to sit and bend over for an extended period
  • Ability to read small print with detail
  • Ability to do repetitive tasks and pull books one at a time for stamping

COMMITMENT:

  • Set schedule for a few weeks to start, then very flexible but consistent.
  • Commit to a minimum of 6 months, due to training requirements.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Stamp and mark books being discarded
  • Place media in new cases, replacing old, worn-out cases
  • Place appropriate labels on DVD and CD cases

Technology Education Assistant


POSITION CATEGORY: Technology Education
POSITION LOCATIONS: Available at all locations
Time Commitment:
2-3 hours per class or an assigned schedule

(weekly, biweekly, or monthly)

POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Responsibilities include assisting library staff with computer classes during classes. Technology Education Assistant may also assist patrons on a one-on-one basis with questions on the use of technology equipment, such as library computers, laptops, e-Readers, tablets, etc. while attending the TechSpert Desk.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Basic computer and internet skills
  • Friendly, helpful demeanor
  • Familiarity with eReaders, flash drives, laptops, and other common devices
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to teach one-on-one

COMMITMENT:

  • Commit to minimum of 3 months
  • Must maintain a regular weekly or monthly schedule

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assisting library staff with computer classes and Tech Talks
  • Assisting patrons with questions as a TechSpert and giving one-on-one instruction and help with their devices
  • Providing encouragement and support to technology learners of all levels

Youth Services Assistant


POSITION CATEGORY: Youth Services
POSITION LOCATIONS: Available at all locations
Time Commitment:
2-3 hours per week

POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The Youth Services Assistant assists the Youth Librarian with youth programming needs.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • May be subject to a Level 2 Background Check

COMMITMENT:

  • Commit to a minimum of 3 months
  • Notify the supervisor if not able to report for a scheduled shift

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist with story time craft preparations or other items for youth programming
  • Work with Youth Librarian to create fun, colorful, and educational youth room bulletin boards

Adult Literacy Positions

Adult Literacy Tutor


POSITION CATEGORY: ADULT LITERACY SERVICES
POSITION LOCATIONS: Available at all locations
Time Commitment: Flexible

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

For a volunteer to become an Adult Literacy Tutor, they must undergo New Tutor Training with the Adult Literacy Services Librarian. This training can be held either 1:1 or in a classroom setting.

The tutor is then matched up with learners and helps them achieve goals through private one-on-one meetings, approximately one/two times a week for 1.5 to 2 hours per session. Time commitment is dependent upon the needs of the learner, and the availability of the tutor. Tutors help learners with life skills, reading, writing, conversational English, and GED exam preparation.

No prior teaching experience is needed; however, the volunteer tutor should have the following attributes: patient & caring attitude, flexibility & reliability, organizational skills, and a respectful & non-judgmental disposition.

Curriculum, materials, and supplies are provided by the library system.

COMMITMENT:

  • Commit to a minimum of 6 months with your learner(s)
  • Maintain a regular weekly or monthly schedule
  • Notify the Adult Literacy Librarian in a timely manner if unable to report on a scheduled day.
  • Only meet with your learner(s) within the library and maintain a high level of professionalism and decorum.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Be prepared and on time for tutoring sessions.
  • Maintain flexibility and compassion for your learner as their needs change throughout the program.
  • Work independently if needed
  • Maintain the privacy of your learner(s)
  • Register online for the use of Study Rooms (if needed)
  • Maintain County Volunteer Time Sheet

Citizenship Tutor


POSITION CATEGORY: ADULT LITERACY SERVICES
POSITION LOCATIONS: Available at all locations
Time Commitment: 1 1/2 hours per week during a series of 5-6 classes

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

For a volunteer to become a Citizenship Tutor, they must undergo Citizenship Tutor Training with the Adult Literacy Services Librarian. This training can be held either 1:1 or in a classroom setting.

Citizenship Tutor volunteers teach and help adult learners by preparing them to pass the U.S. Citizenship exam, covering topics such as American history, branches of government, courts and legal system, and famous Americans.

The group classes are 1.5 hours in length and are usually taught once per week in a series of 5-6 classes.

No prior teaching experience is needed; however, the volunteer tutor should have the following attributes: patient & caring attitude, flexibility & reliability, organizational skills, and a respectful & non-judgmental disposition.

Curriculum, materials, and supplies are provided by the library system.

COMMITMENT:

  • Commit to a 1.5 to 2-hour class, once a week, for at least 6 weeks.
  • Maintain a regular weekly and monthly schedule
  • Notify the Adult Literacy Librarian within a timely manner if unable to report on a scheduled day

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Be prepared and on time for tutoring sessions.
  • Maintain flexibility and compassion for your learner(s) as their needs change throughout the program
  • Communicate with Customer Service Specialist/Literacy Services Librarian about materials/copies needed before class sessions
  • Have basic computer skills
  • Be on time for sessions while allowing time to set up the computer before class starts
  • Work independently if needed
  • Maintain the privacy of your learner(s)
  • Fill out the Attendance Slip at the end of class for library staff.

Pre-Ged Instructor


POSITION CATEGORY: ADULT LITERACY SERVICES
POSITION LOCATIONS: Available at all locations
Time Commitment: Flexible

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

This volunteer position serves by tutoring learners in preparation for the GED exam. Different areas of the exam include: Reasoning Through Language Arts, Writing, Mathematical Reasoning, Social Studies, and Science. Tutors can choose to either tutor in specific GED areas or tutor for the exam in its entirety.

The volunteer is required to attend a Pre-GED Instructor Training Session. The training prepares the tutor on how to be an effective instructor. Specific Pre-GED curriculum materials are covered, including literacy facts and goal setting.

The volunteer tutor should have the following attributes: patient & caring attitude, flexibility & reliability, organizational skills, and a respectful & non-judgmental disposition.

Curriculum, additional materials, and supplies will be provided by the library.

COMMITMENT:

  • Time commitment is based on the needs of the learner and the availability of the instructor.
  • Tutors should be able to commit to at least 6-8 months of meeting with their learners 1-2 times per week.
  • Maintain a regular weekly and monthly schedule
  • Notify the Adult Literacy Librarian within a timely manner if unable to report on a scheduled day

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Be prepared and on time for tutoring sessions
  • Maintain flexibility and compassion for your learner
  • Work independently if needed
  • Adapt to the needs of your learner
  • Maintain the privacy of your learner
