Summer Programs End in Excitement!

The Florida Library Youth Program (FLYP) winners of the bicycles and helmets were front row left to right: Matthew Budd, Katherine Seaman, and Josh Shaner, back row left to right: Cindy Fowler, Wal-Mart Community Relations and Sean Wilson, Wal-Mart Store Manager.

Citrus County Library System Director, Flossie Benton Rogers announced that the Florida Library Youth Program (FLYP) and other summer programs wrapped up with much excitement. This year's theme was "Book Feast (Festin de Libros)"

Nearly 3000 children participated in this year's FLYP, Summer Blast, and other summer programs. Kids that participated were further encouraged to read by entering their names on Reading Logs which were used to draw prize incentives provided by the summer reading programs' business sponsors:

  • Bikes and Helmets were made possible with the support of Wal-Mart of Homosassa

  • Desk Accessories were made possible with the support of Belks of Crystal River

  • Skate Boards and Safety Paks were made possible with the support of K-Mart of Crystal River

The completion of the FLYP Reading Logs, and the drawing of the prizewinners signaled the end of the Library System's Summer Programs, just ahead of the children's start of the new school year.

Rogers stated that good reading attitudes and skills are developed when children are young, and urges parents and other primary caregivers to take a strong interest in a youngster's reading activities.

"Blast Off To The World Of Imagination!"

Art projects from the "Blast Off to the World of Imagination!" workshops have been entered in a countywide contest and have been displayed at Coastal Region, Central Region, and Lakes Region branches. There is still time to vote for your favorites. A panel of judges, including a local art teacher and a representative from the county’s Solid Waste Division, selected winners in three categories based on the artists’ grade level, creative use of materials, and other criteria. Three winners received art supplies as prizes, and the people’s choice artist was announced  at the reception.  (View Projects)
